Honking In Traffic is a blog about tandem riding and the lifestyle thereof. We are a couple that is recently married and dedicated to riding bikes for fun, adventure, utility, and commuting. We pray that the tandem nickname “Divorce machine” has no bearing in reality. We’ve heard an adage that whichever direction your relationship is going, you’ll get there faster on a tandem!
Bike guru Sheldon Brown, may he rest in peace, explains that when both riders on a tandem are standing up pedaling in unison, this is can be called “honking.” It’s an “advanced” skill, requiring synchronicity of movement, balance, and effort, though its benefits for the riding pair are dubious, or at least ambiguous. This blog is a record of our lessons in honking.
The tandem cast:
Captain is the person up front who steers and shifts and brakes, and shouts long-winded stories over his shoulder: Jer.
Stoker is the person in the back who pedals hard, reads the map, unwraps energy bars, and servers as the ambassador to other road users: Honey.
